About Cheng-Han

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Education and Early Research

Cheng-Han (Andy) Yu obtained his Bachelor’s degree from National Taiwan University (NTU) in 2010, where he conducted undergraduate research under the supervision of Prof. Man-kit Leung. He remained at NTU to pursue
a Master’s degree in the same group, focusing on OLED host materials and chiral electropolymerization in liquid crystals. After completing his Master’s degree in 2012, he fulfilled his mandatory military service for one year and later returned to NTU as a teaching and research assistant.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

Doctoral Research in the United States

In 2015, Andy began his doctoral studies at Texas A&M University, USA under the guidance of Prof. Oleg V. Ozerov, where his research involved non-innocent pincer ligands, redox communication behaviors, and metallopolymers.

POSTDOCTORAL EXPERIENCE

Postdoctoral Research in Taiwan

Following the completion of his Ph.D., he returned to Taiwan during the COVID-19 pandemic and joined the Tiow-Gan Ong group at Academia Sinica as a postdoctoral fellow in 2020. There, he contributed to multiple interdisciplinary projects, including supramolecular nanocages, photocatalysis, ligand design, and electrocatalysis in collaboration with other research groups around Taiwan. During his stay, he also supervised master’s students on their independent research projects.

INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH

Research in Germany

In 2023, he joined the research group of Prof. Viktoria D. Gessner at Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, where his work focused on the development of nickel- and gold-catalyzed transformations enabled by specifically tailored ligand systems.

ACADEMIC POSITION

Faculty Appointment

After a two-year stay in Germany, he returned to Taiwan and joined the Department of Chemistry at National Taiwan Normal University as an Assistant Professor in 2026.

BEYOND THE LAB

Life Outside the Laboratory

Outside the laboratory, Andy enjoys going to the gym, exploring folklore across cultures, traveling, practicing singing, playing soccer, and spending time with his family and his two beloved pets, Luna and Amber.
